Crook County, established on October 9th, 1882, was named after General George Crook. The area was a tough wilderness terrain that made settlement difficult and traversing the area was made easier by the discovery of the Santiam Pass in the 1860s. The county seat is Prineville, and the population of 20,978 enjoys inhabiting a healthy area of 2,979 square miles of land and 8.2 square miles of natural water.
